What It's All About

We love to get in the car and travel. We haven't seen much of the United States but we are planning to take more driving trips over the next few years. We're not sure where we're going but we know that we want to do more than just visit the "hotspots." We want to meet new people and visit small towns and cities that might be overlooked if we just followed the guidebooks.

We want YOU to tell us where to go. We want YOU to give us a reason to get off the interstate and visit your hometown. Is there a unique store that we shouldn't miss? Does your town host an unusual festival or weekly market night? Is there a wonderful museum or gallery or home that shouldn't be overlooked? Does a local chef make the best dish in the world? Then let us know. We will let you know where and when we plan to go and hope that you will tell us what to do on our journey. And we will be writing and posting pictures of all the places we visit and the wonderful people we are sure to meet. Sounds like fun? We think so and we hope that you will join us on our adventures.

We're looking for your help in one more area. Is someone in your town feeding people who would otherwise go hungry? We're not talking about organizations - we want individuals or small groups. If so, please let us know about them. We are looking to start a food program in our hometown and would love to talk to others who have been successful with this.

So that's who we are and what we are doing. Won't you become part of our journey? Sign up to follow this blog and we will let you know where we are headed. Or follow us on twitter @whymytown to see where we will be next. It's sure to be a fascinating journey and we hope you'll come along for the ride.

  1. If you find yourselves in Portland or Eugene, I think you should go to Voodoo Doughnut (http://voodoodoughtnut.com). I have several friends that have been and raved about it!

  2. A stop in Denver is a must. We do have a nice zoo, but if there is any one thing I urge people to see, it's Red Rocks Amphitheater. There's a nice view of Denver, you're surrounded by the amazing red rock formations that exude antiquity, and there's the history of the place itself from early 1900s Easter services to all the great musicians that have played between the rocks.

From the top, you can go down to the museum, see the stars lining the walls, photos capturing faces and moments in time.

The Rocks are just west of Denver and very close to I-70.

There are places in town that serve buffalo burgers or buffalo steaks. If you haven't had one, they're very good, very lean and best served medium rare as buffalo is drier that beef. The Buckeye Exchange holds the first liquor license issued in Colorado, serves the burgers and is a piece of history in itself.

Be prepared for all kinds of weather! Safe journey!
